Big Bookbinder → Intensive Bookbinding Course 02/02 – 09/03

The course is in Czech language. /// Learn the basics of bookbinding and become a great bookbinder. During the 6 lessons we will familiarise you with bookbinding materials, present several bookbindings and show you how to work with bookbinding machines in our workshop. We will help you to develop your own designs so that you finish them in a clean form and take away from the course not only new experiences but also finished products, such as a notebook, diary/sketchbook and photo album.

The course is intended for beginners and advanced students and can be adapted to the different pace of each participant.

What can you expect on the course?

1. Introduction to the types of bookbindings, introduction to a bookbinding workshop and work safety. Trial work with machines to create a soft bookbinding.
2. Talking about paper and other bookbinding materials, the beginning of creating a sewn binding in hardcover (V7/V8 binding) – preparing sections and folds.
3. Joining the sections into an inner book by sewing on to fabric or linen strips. Inner book rounding, spine gluing, inner book trimming on stack cutter, bookmark and backing material gluing. Selection of materials for the covers.
4. Preparation and coating of the covers with canvas or paper or a combination of both materials. Joining of the inner book and covers.
5. Creation of a hardcover photo album with Japanese binding. Preparation of the inner book. Choice of coating materials for covers.
6. Completion of the photo album. Preparation and coating of the covers, working the book with the covers with a punch and sewing the book together. Introduction to traditional types of Japanese stitching.

The content of each lesson depends on the pace of the participants, so it may vary slightly from the schedule

Teacher MgA. Kamila Nováková

She passed through the Book, Papermaking and Graphic Design studios at the Ladislav Sutnar Faculty of Design and Art, part of the University of West Bohemia. She graduated with a dissertation in the form of a manual for handsewn bookbinding, scissors, paper. The starting point of her work is always the material, and she is interested in its diversity and craftsmanship. She sees the workshops and courses as an exchange of experiences and approaches between partners.
